The African Continental Volleyball Zone 5 Club Championship games open in Rwanda next week attracting twelve top clubs for the tournament scheduled February 20-23 at Petit Stade inside the Amahoro stadium.
Zone 5 volleyball countries include Rwanda, Ethiopia, Egypt, Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Djibouti and South Sudan.
For the Kigali games, the participating teams expected are from Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Burundi.
Speaking to the media on Friday President of Zone 5 Gustave Nkurunziza said that the Kigali tournament will be the first edition to be organized, with the aim to prepare the clubs, players and national teams for the June country Zone 5 volleyball competition plus 2019 All Africa Games tin Morocco August 21-25.
Rwanda will be represented by five teams – REG, Gisagara, UTB, APR, and Kirehe.
Nkurunziza said that hosting the games in Rwanda will be for touristic purposes. The Zone 5 General Assembly will also be convened to discuss the forward.
The other teams which have confirmed include Sports, NEMO stars, KAVC from Uganda, Amical – all from Burundi), Jeshi Stars (Tanzania), Madda Walabu University and Wolatha Dicha Sports Club from Ethiopia.
Teams will be grouped in four pools of three teams each.
All teams from their respective countries are ranked among the best four, except Kirehe volleyball team that is invited on a wild card.
Kenyan clubs pulled out at the last minute citing internal factors.
The winner will walk away with a tournament trophy and $1,200 as cash prize. The first runner up will pocket $800 and the second will receive $500.
