Eritrean Merhawi Kudus Keeps Yellow Jersey, Wins Longest Route

The Eritrean Merhawi Kudus of Pro Astana Team has won the longest stage of Tour du Rwanda, Huye-Rubavu, riding for 213.1 Km.

He gets to also keep the Yellow Jersey because be won the Kigali-Huye Stage 2 route on Monday yesterday.

The Huye-Rubavu route is also the longest that has been covered by Tour du Rwanda in its history. It is a new route just introduced. Merhawi cycled for 5h21’15’’.

In addition, Merhawi also won the Bigogwe summit which is said to be the highest point in Tour du Rwanda 2019.

It was clearly visible on state TV which is covering the competition LIVE, that the riding skill of the 24-year old Eritrean could not be matched by the others as they trailed him.

Team Rwanda is still struggling to cope now the Tour du Rwanda has been elevated to an international category which brings big names from the cycling world.

Who is Merhawi Kudus?

Merhawi Kudus Ghebremedhin is an Eritrean cyclist currently rides for UCI World Team Astana. He took part in Tour du France 2015 and became one the first Africans to start the Tour with his teammates.

He was born 23 January 1994 in Asmara. He first came for Tour du Rwanda in 2012 at age 18 and finished sixth after winning Kigali-Nyagatare stage.
