Ugandan-born striker who recently obtained Rwandan citizenship Meddie Kagere is staying true to his contract – keeping the Tanzania team that hired him among the top on the league table.

The Ex-Police FC striker gave Tanzanian champions Simba FC a 1-0 victory against arch-rivals Yanga FC over the weekend.

Kagere swung through the Yanga defense with the winning goal to settle the fierce Dar derby in favor of Simba at the National Main stadium.

He had earlier produced the valuable winner when Simba humbled the mighty record holder African champions Al Ahly of Egypt to 1-0 in a crucial CAF Champions’ League group stage tie in the same stadium on February 12.

When Kagere scores, he has his own signature way of celebrating; covers his right eye. The gesture is fast trending in Dar es Salaam and across the country. Tanzanian social media is flooded with pictures of fans doing the same.

Meddie Kagere, 32, moved to Simba SC from Kenya side Gor following last year’s SportsPesa Cup in Nakuru where he played a starring role, scoring and setting the other for countryman Jacques Tuyisenge when the Kenyan giants ran out 2-0 winners to retain the Kenyan trophy.

He, however, could not inspire his side to win the US$30,000 prize at the semifinals in the SportPesa league when they bowed out after losing 1-2 to Kenya’s Bandari in a game where Kagere opened the scoring moments before the break.

Currently, Kagere is the Caf Champions league top scorer with 3 goals together with Jean-Marc Makusu from AS Vita Club from DR Congo.

Kagere is reportedly attracting the interest of more top clubs. The Congolese giants TP Mazembe and Vita club both want him.

Simba FC is fifth on the Tanzanian domestic table standing with 36 points out of 11 wins in 15 games played. They have lost once and drew thrice. Yanga tops the standing with 58 points.
