Uganda Parliament Spends Less Than 5 Minutes on Rwanda Case

Inside the chamber of the Ugandan parliament where interest from lawmakers on the Rwanda issue seems to be fading

The anticipated Government statement to Parliament this Thursday afternoon on the standoff with Rwanda did not attract the enthusiasm it had generated in the previous session on Tuesday.

General Moses Ali, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament was dismissed at the time.

Today, the Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, appeared in person.

“The issue is yet to be solved, all concerned departments are playing their roles, and when it is done the government will come out with an official statement on it.” Rugunda said told the House.

He added that the government report will be completed within a weeks time.

“The Uganda government and Rwanda government are discussing this matter from all concerned authorities and angles with both sides willing to collaborate in solving it, so we have hope that it will be resolved as soon as possible,” said Dr Rugunda.

In a complete reversal, the mood was quiet, unlike on Tuesday when heated exchanges ensued over the border closure.

Within less than 5 minutes, the Rwanda issue on the House agenda paper was completed.

“Let us hope that within a week, [the report] will be done. Lets move to other business,” concluded the Speaker Rebecca Kadaga.

On Tuesday, President Yoweri Museveni directed all government officials to stop reacting on the Rwanda issue. Since then, there has been no comment from any officials on the matter.

Our Reporter at the Uganda Parliament said no lawmakers were willing to speak about the Rwanda case, saying they would wait for the government report.
