I paid Sh. 60,000 Bribe to Get Blanket in Uganda Military Jail – Narrates Deported Rwandan

A 43 year-old Rwandan national Kayibanda Rogers who has been missing for about 50 days in Uganda was today abruptly deported back to Rwanda.

Kayibanda, went missing on the night of January 11 in Kampala, after attending his young brother’s wedding during the day. While at the fan joint, men surrounded him on the outside, bundled him in a waiting van and sped off.

“I tried to fight back and also shouted to notify my friends but everything happened so fast,” he told journalists in Kigali this evening.

Kayibanda says he was taken to Mbuya military barracks, one of Uganda’s most notorious military facilities. He was in the custody of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI).

He claims to have lived through torture including spending all his time there in handcuffs.

CMI officers accused Kayibanda of being a Rwandan soldier and a spy planted in Uganda. “They claimed I was a Major in the Rwandan army,” says the youthful businessman.

He told reporters that in the room he was held there were more than 30 other Rwandans.

“We communicated in Kinyarwanda,” he said of the Rwandan national language.

Kayibanda narrated that conditions were unbearable in the cells in addition to constant interrogation.

“To get a blanked I had to bribe one of the soldiers with 60,000 Ugandan shillings,” he said, which is about Rwf 20,000 or $22.

When Kayibanda went missing, his family launched a vigorous social media campaign calling for his release.

Today, his sister Julian Kayibanda Ingabire announced his freedom on Twitter, thanking the public for support.

Kayibanda was reportedly deported with another Rwandan, who is yet to make public appearance.
