Six People Shot Dead by Security Forces in Past Month

Police this Thursday morning shot dead a suspected robber in Kigali, in incidents that have seen at least six people killed in the past few weeks.
A 30year-old Eric Niyomugabo was shot by soldiers on patrol after he tried to jump off a moving vehicle as he was being taken into custody.
Theophile Niragire, the executive secretary of Gisozi sector of Gasabo district said Niyomugabo was caught red-handed in the wee hours of Thursday digging through the wall of a resident’s home. This technique has become common for thieves.
RDF soldiers on patrol put him under arrest and were taking him to a police station when he tried to flee.
In this same district of Gasabo, last week, police officers shot dead a man whom they had been tracking. He supposedly had grabbed a handbag from a British woman in broad-day and rod off on his motor bike.
The bag had Rwf 100,000 cash ($120), an iPhone and several other personal items.
When he was intercepted in his hiding place, he tried to run and was shot dead.
Police recovered Rwf37,000 left and all the other items.
There was also another shooting by police in Masaka sector of Kicukiro district late last month. The suspected robber was also killed on spot.
Although unrelated, three people were also shot and killed late at night as they entered Rwanda’s border from DR Congo last week in Rubavu district.
Security and local officials said at the time that they were smugglers carrying merchandise illegally into Rwanda.

The smugglers had passed through routes regularly used by Rwandan FDLR rebels based in Congo to attack Rwandan troops.
Meanwhile, following the incident, villagers in another nearby area went into rage attacking security forces stationed there accusing them of killing their family members in Rubavu. (Read: Angry Villagers Attack Security Personnel in Rubavu District)
