Rayon Sports FC Clinches Top Football League Title

Rayon Sports FC commonly known as Gikundiro officially clinched the 2018/2019 Azam Rwandan football league, on Friday, May 24, 2019.

With one game to spare, Rayon has been on Friday crowned the league champions after hammering Kirehe FC 4-0 away in the Eastern Province – to secure three points needed to claim a record 9th league title in history.

Burundian forward Jules Ulimwengu scored in the 25th minute to give the local Blues’ a lead after canceling the Kirehe FC backline in the game.

On the 39th minute, Kirehe’s defender Prosper Nzabonima handled a cross ball within his penalty area, forcing the match referee Ruzindana Nsoro to point for a spot kick.

Then Ghanaian forward Micheal Sarpong made it two after converting a penalty to give Rayon the confidence on the 40th minute of the game to make it, shortly he missed a golden opportunity to make it three when his short was saved by Kirehe goalkeeper.

Kirehe FC player Yusufu Habimana received a yellow card for badly tackling Ulimwengu in the 26th minute of the second half.

Ulimwengu yet again made it three in the 74th minute through a header which came from across from team captain Thierry Manzi.

On the 76th minutes of the game, Rayon head coach Robertinho made a change to bring on Eric Iradukunda Gilbert Mugisha, while Kirehe FC substituted Karim Patient for Isaie Mutabazi four minutes later.

On the 90+1 minute of the game, the Ghanaian netted the fourth to seal the victory for Rayon before the referee blew the final whistle to end the game.

For the Burundian, it was the 19th goal of the season, making him the top maxi man with a game to spare while Sarpong netted his 15th of the season.

Clear cut chances were few and far for Kirehe FC who struggled but could not put the ball behind Rayon net to secure a consolation.

Rayon has 69 points, seven points ahead of arch-rivals APR FC who are playing against Espoir FC this Saturday.

The victory means Rayon will be crowned with the trophy on June 9th, a day after hosting Marines FC in their last fixture.
