Sankara Can Forge Documents To Flee Rwanda If Given Bail – Court Rules

A court in Kigali has refused to grant bail to captured former spokesman of a rebel outfit Nsabimana Callixte alias Maj Callixte Sankara – agreeing with Prosecution to keep him in custody for another month.

In a room filled by only journalists, the Gasabo Primary Court ruled this afternoon that Sankara cannot be freed considering the serious grounds raised by prosecutor in the previous hearing on May 23.

The unnamed Judge said Sankara had himself pleaded guilty to 16 charges and actually apologized.

Among the charges, said the court, was using forged documents particularly the passport from Lesotho, which he could repeat and flee the country.

Court also concurred with Prosecution that Sankara has no known address where he can stay if released, since even in his passport, it is indicated that he was born in Masisi region of eastern DR Congo.

In actual sense, Sankara was born in Rwanda, grew up here – only leaving after 2008.

Court also said Sankara is a security risk considering that before he was arrested, he had openly called for war against a sitting government and formed armed group to that effect.

Court said each of the charges against Sankara carries a sentence of more than two years, which makes him ineligible for bail.

Nsabimana Callixte alias Maj Sankara was captured in the Indian ocean island of Comoros on April 14.
