Amavubi Head Coach Targets Rwandans In Foreign Soccer Leagues

Kevin Monnet Paquet of French side St Etienne has Rwandan roots, and head coach of national team Amavubi believes such players will boost the team’s chances of global success

Newly appointed head coach of the national football team Amavubi (Wasps) Mashami Vincent has embarked on a campaign to bring foreign-based Rwandan players.

Previously, his predecessors failed to lure Rwandans in international leagues to return home to play for the national team.

The players who did not come include Gasana Tchité Meme, who played for Mukura VS for several years. But when he relocated to Europe, he refused Amavubi offers. Another is Kevin Monnet Paquet, currently playing for St Etienne in France.

Amavubi’s youthful coach Mashami says bringing Rwandans from international leagues is going to be one of his priorities.

Among those on his list is Kevin Monnet Paquet of French side St Etienne. Others are Emmanuel Tuyishime from the U.S league, Nsengiyaremye Sylve alias Kamoso in China and Aldo Kalulu from UK side Swansea.

“We are in talks with each of them to have them take part in Amavubi games,” Mashami told local media.

The national team has struggled to find relevance nationally as years go-by without a single international trophy.

The perception on Rwandan football got to its lowest during the qualifiers for the 2019 African Cup of Nations.

All Rwanda’s neighbors DR Congo, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and bitter political rivals Burundi went to Egypt – leaving Amavubi to be the regional laughing stock.

Mashami’s job is that tough as he faces pressure from all corners for results, and quickly.
