80 Year-Old Woman Arrested Among Suspected Thieves In Kamonyi

Police in Kamonyi district, southern province, has arrested 7 people including an 80 year-old woman in connection to a theft of a shop in their area.

The theft happened on Saturday night in Kayenzi sector from a trading center called Kayenzi. The shop belongs to a one Janvier Gatete.

In a joint police operation with local community personnel ‘Abanyerondo’ on Sunday, led to arrest of six young men. They had dug through the wall of the shop and stolen goods and money.

Those arrested include: Nirere Pacifique (23), Ukwizagira Eric (20), Nitegeka Bosco (20), Nsengiyera Vincent (38), Nshuti Jackson (32) and Simparika Theophile (32).

During interrogation, they revealed that the stolen goods had been kept at the home of 89 year-old Uzamushaka Véronique, according to CIP Sylvestre Twajamahoro, Police spokesman for Southern Province.

The goods were indeed found at the granny’s home. While the 6 men are in custody, the elderly woman is being processed while at her home.

It remains unclear yet if any of the men has any family relationship with the woman.

Among items they took included: 5 jerrycans of cooking oil, 11 sacks of rice, different types of soft and alcoholic drinks, and at least Rwf 6,000 cash.

RIB begins processing their case this Monday. They risk up to two years in jail and up to Rwf 2m fine.
