Burundi Installs Russian Computer Software For Government Systems

Burundi has joined a new club of countries using Russian software to manage government operations – away from the dominance of the west.

Russian firm Cloud Technologies, in a deal signed Wednesday in Sochi, on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa Summit, will deliver MyOffice® solutions to Burundi.

Burundian IT company INGO Tech s.a.r.l, a government backed firm, will oversee the project to set up a completely new system for government documents and other operations with servers backed up in Russia.

In 2016, Russian government dropped using all Microsoft office softwares. Since then, the Russians are using their own systems, part of the Kremlin’s strategy to establish its own tech and web systems like China.

At the Sochi Summit, Burundi is being represnted by 2nd Vice President Joseph Butore, as its leader Pierre Nlurunziza has not left the country since May 2015, following coup that nearly toppled him.

According to the agreement, the Government of Burundi is buying 300 MyOffice® Professional licenses from New Cloud Technologies and creating a private cloud infrastructure for the collaborative workflow with documents inside the state information system.

For the Russian software developer this international contract was the first in its history.

The new Russia-Burundi deal says the new system will provide “secured cloud infrastructure and data control” for the Bujumbura government.
