A few months after Tanzanian digital satellite service provider AZAM TV ended $2.5m sponsorship for Rwanda’s football league, its parent company has signed deal with military side APR FC.

This Wednesdsy, Bakhresa Grain Milling Rwanda Ltd, which is part of the Bakhresa Group from Tanzania, signed a Rwf 228m sponsorship package for APR FC.

Bakhresa Group is a large conglomerate based in Tanzania, owned by Tanzanian billionaire Said Salim Bakhresa. It has portfolios in nearly everything from manufacturing, energy, services, and media.

Bakhresa Group is also the parent company of AZAM TV, which in mid last year shocked the Rwanda football fraternity when it announced it was pulling out from sponsoring the local league. It had been doing so since 2015.

At a function today in Kigali, APR FC vice chair Maj Gen Mubarak Muganga and Munir Bakhresa, the head of Bakhresa Grain Milling Rwanda Ltd, exchanged a signed dummy cheque for the sponsorship up to 2024.

APR jerseys will carry AZAM logo and the manufacturer will have exclusive right to advertise its products that include a range of soft drinks and edibles.

Bakhresa Group also owns AZAM FC, currently ranking among the top teams in the Tanzania soccer league. Though completely unrelated, the deal by AZAM FC’s parent company opens doors for behind the scenes collaboration.

It also doubtful that APR FC games and its brand will not be featuring prominently on the AZAM TV satellite sports channels.
