Tanzania Opposition Decimated Out of Parliament, Retains Just Two Seats

Incumbent President John Pombe Magufuli has won a comfortable second term with an absolute majority in Parliament

The all powerful ruling party in Tanzania, the Chama Cha Mapinduzi or CCM party, has won all but two seats in Parliament – leaving the opposition crying fowl.

In the 264-seat House, the opposition won just two seats in the general elections held this Wednesday with President John Pombe Magufuli as the presidential candidate.

For the previous election in 2015, the opposition bloc won 70 seats. It means in the latest polls, the opposition has been completely decimated out of Parliament – the first such action in decades.

The opposition failure was so shocking that one of the two winners Aida Khenan said she may not take up her seat in Parliament. The Chadema party lone MP-elect suggested she would be ready to forego her win in defence of democracy.

“I am ready to join my colleagues for whatever decision they may opt to take,” she said as quoted by Citizen newspaper.

As for the presidential polls, turnout was 50.7% out of 29,754,696 registered voters. Incumbent President Magufuli won 12.5million of 15.9m votes cast, taking more than 84% of the vote. It is a very big win.

His closest challenger Tundu Lissu won juat 1.9m votes, a humiliating defeat. He has rejected the results.

There were 15 presidential candidates in the election.

In the 2015 polls, Magufuli won 58.4% of the vote.
