2020 is gone and it has been tough for politicians. This year, a political entity other than the Head of State, has also issued a message to Rwandans.
For his part, President Paul Kagame made a short message aired earlier than usual, at 9pm on state broadcaster RBA. Kagame said he had spoken at length about the state of the nation in his address on December 21.
In a 1minute 49 seconds recorded address, Kagame said: “We begin this New Year with the confidence that despite 2020’s unique challenges, Rwanda made progress in many areas. Because of your commitment, dedication, & love for the country, this coming year will be better than the one we just had.”
Kagame also called on the nation to continue to be “vigilant” in the months to come as the country awaits the possible arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine.
On the hand, the opposition Democratic Green Party of Rwanda (DGPR) also issued statement to the nation. It is the only one, in a crowded political field of 10 supposed opposition parties in the country, which has made a new year message to population.
Here is the full Green Party statement issued by its leader Dr Frank Habineza.
Democratic Green Party of Rwanda End of Year Message and Aspirations for 2021
As we come to the close of the year 2020, which was characterized by the COVID-19 Pandemic that left many families mourning the loss of their loved ones, we take on this moment to foremost comfort all those that lost their loved ones and express our gratitude to all front-line workers who sacrificed themselves to contain this pandemic in Rwanda. A big thank you thank to all Nurses, Doctors, others in the medical professional and our National Police in collaboration with all security organs who worked tirelessly to ensure our security and survival from this pandemic and other security threats.
Despite being a challenging year, The Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, was able to conduct two national gatherings bringing together political bureau members from different parts of the country and recorded some milestones during 2020, for that we are grateful to all party members, supporters, media fraternity, National Consultative Forum of Political Organizations and the Government of Rwanda.
During this year, DGPR got a third Parliamentarian, Hon. Alexis MUGISHA, who was elected a Senator by the National Consultative Forum of Political Organizations in Rwanda, this was a great milestone indeed. We are grateful to all Rwanda’s political parties and political organizations that entrusted him with that responsibility.
DGPR was also able to strengthen party structures by practicing internal democracy where several members were elected to head key structures in the party leadership both on provincial level and the City of Kigali. Women greens also elected new leaders in the City of Kigali and the Ethics and Conflict Resolution Committee got new leaders.
The party also developed a strategic plan, conducted an Organization Capacity Needs assessment, revised its communication strategy and made a mid-term review and evaluation of its Political Program/Platform.
MPs representing the party in Parliament advocated for reforms on different policies, programs and legislation, on key issues benefiting the population. A lot has been published in the media and we are grateful the media fraternity for keeping the democracy banner raised in Rwanda.
Looking ahead to 2021, we shall continue: strengthening party structures in the country, capacity building of party members, collaboration with different stakeholders and sectors, implementation of various party strategies, advocating for reforms or changes of government programs and policies in favor of citizens better welfare and environmental sustainability.
On behalf of Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, we wish to thank you all for supporting us and promoting the democracy and well-being of Rwandans.
Please accept our best wishes to you and your families for a wonderful holiday season and a healthy and prosperous New Year 2021.
Dr. Frank HABINEZA [MP]
President, Democratic Green Party of Rwanda
