Rwanda Parliarment Issues Damning Report on DR Congo

On January 31, 2023, the Lower Chamber of Parliament set up Ad hoc Committee to assess the legacy of colonial history as one of the sources of the conflicts in the east of DR Congo and its impact on the relations between DRC and Rwanda.

This Wednesday, the 9-member team read the findings to the plenary. And they make very grim reading, including a suggestion that tens of thousands of Rwandans were ferried to Congo to work there because the Congolese were lazy. The report also releases what they say is map of Rwanda, before some pieces were sliced off and attached to Uganda and present-day DR Congo.

The Committee composed of 9 members was tasked with gathering information and thoroughly examining the role of colonial history in the region’s conflicts, especially the problems in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo which affect the relationship between Rwanda and DRC. It was given a period of two months to deliver its report to the Chamber of Deputies.

Other responsibilities that the Ad hoc Committee was to look into included: finding out why the problems in the relationship between Rwanda and Congo keep existing and never end completely and reflecting on what can be done to solve the conflicts between the two countries.

This Committee was to assess among others, the reason why Rwandan FDLR militia and other militias groups based in the East of DRC fight against Rwanda are not completely dismantled, and the reasons behind the reticence of the international community on this issue.
